PROJECT WIN: New U of T Academic Tower

We’re thrilled to announce that Plan Group has been selected to deliver the Electrical, Mechanical, and Technology Scope of work for the new, and highly anticipated, Mass Timber Academic Tower at The University of Toronto’s St George Campus.


Set to be built atop the west end of the existing Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport, the new Mass Timber Academic Tower will provide an additional 14 stories, and just over 128,000 square feet, of academic space at The University of Toronto’s main campus. Upon completion in the summer of 2025, the facility will be home to numerous academic units, including The Rotman Executive Programs, The Munk School of Global Affairs, The Faculty of Arts & Science, The Master of Mathematical Finance Program (MMF), and The Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education. With its floor-to-ceiling windows and exposed mass timber framework, the tower will make for a stunning addition to the existing infrastructure; and we can’t wait to help bring it to life.


​Although work on-site is scheduled to kick off in January 2023, our procurement and estimating teams have been working to support the delivery of this project since the fall of 2021. Teaming up across all areas of our Mechanical, Electrical, and Technology business units, we worked collaboratively to bring forward cost-efficient and alternative technical solutions; helping to ensure our clients could design and execute the delivery of their project with utmost efficiency. As a result, earlier this year, we were selected as the Design Assist Partner for this project, and have been helping to prepare for a successful execution ever since. As a one-solution Design Assist Provider AND the Electrical, Mechanical & Technology subcontractor on this project, we get the incredible opportunity to work alongside our clients every step of the way.

One of the many reasons we’re so proud to deliver the Electrical, Mechanical, and Technology scope of work for this project is because it gives us a chance to promote sustainable construction.


The low-energy, decarbonized, mass timber structure exemplifies the direction in which our industry must take to protect our planet. Mechanically, we are focusing on decarbonization and will be implementing a perimeter radiation and chilled beam heating and cooling solution, served by a heat pump driven Central Utility Plant (CUP). Electrically, we will work towards optimizing electrical distribution throughout the building as well as installing low-wattage lighting solutions. Our Technology team will further support the needs of our clients by providing top-of-the-line Security, Audio Visual, and Communications Distribution Systems throughout the building. Furthermore, our team will have the added challenge of ensuring that our new multi-discipline solution seamlessly integrates with that of the existing Goldring Centre.
