It's official! Last week, our Mechanical team was awarded a certificate of substantial completion for the new Mass Timber Academic Tower—The cornerstone of Centennial College's A-block Expansion at their Progress campus.
One of the most notable features of the building is that it is constructed almost entirely of mass timber—a sustainable and renewable alternative building material. The use of mass timber in construction has several benefits, including reducing the carbon footprint of the building, improving indoor air quality, and providing a warm and natural architectural aesthetic. Additionally, the tower's mass timber build helped support a quicker and more efficient construction process compared to conventional methods.
The building was designed with sustainability in mind, with features such as a green roof, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems. We were responsible for delivering a fully integrated mechanical system which included a VRF system, an Air Source Heat Pump, Air Handling Units, Fans, a Fireplace, and even a few Mechanical Solar Panels! As the project's Mechanical subcontractors, #TeamPlanGroup is proud of our contribution to this exciting accomplishment.
The Mass Timber Academic Tower will be home to several academic programs, including engineering technology, environmental science, and architecture. The building includes classrooms, offices, laboratories, other learning spaces, a cafeteria, and an outdoor terrace.
This project is a prime example of how Plan Group supports innovative and sustainable construction to help provide a modern and functional learning environment for students and faculty while actively building a greener future for us all. We're honoured to have been a part of such a ground-breaking project.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the successful delivery of this project!
