Why did you decide to get into your respective trade?
I’ve always enjoyed hands-on work and problem-solving. Plumbing seemed like a great way to combine those skills with a stable, rewarding career where I can make a direct impact by helping people in practical ways.

One memorable experience was working on a complex job where we had to overhaul an entire system in an old Smithing Smelter in Sudbury, Ontario. The teamwork involved and the sense of accomplishment after getting it right really solidified that I’d made the right career choice.

I’ve been lucky to have great mentors and supportive peers who’ve been willing to share their knowledge and offer guidance when needed. It’s made a huge difference in my growth.
What advice would you give someone looking to get into the trades or just starting in the trades?
Stay curious, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s a learning process, and the more you absorb from those around you, the better you’ll become. Also, focus on quality in your work from the start - it pays off in the long run.

Why did you decide to get into your respective trade?
Growing up, I was always drawn to hands-on learning and problem-solving. The satisfaction of building something useful, using tools, and creating solutions motivated me. Although the trades have been male-dominated in the past, I couldn’t see why that would stop me.

Since joining the trade, my experiences have been a mix of learning, growing, and some occasional struggles. I’ve faced some skepticism and surprise from others who might not expect to see a woman in the trades, but I’ve found that proving myself capable and determined has made those barriers no longer present. There have been moments when I’ve had a tough time, but that comes with any challenging field. Throughout my time in the trades, I’ve seen it grow more diverse and inclusive, which has made my experience more encouraging.

I’ve been fortunate to have strong, supportive peers and leaders to look up to throughout my apprenticeship. Someone is always willing to lend a helping hand, share advice, tips and tricks or an encouraging word. The camaraderie at work makes a big difference, and I’ve noticed that hard work and determination bring you nothing but respect. I am beyond happy that I chose this career path to develop a skill set that will always be in demand and to become the best tradesperson I can be.
What advice would you give someone looking to get into the trades or just starting in the trades?
My advice for anyone considering getting into the trades would be to keep an open mind, be patient and curious to learn. It may seem overwhelming at times, but ask questions and seek advice whenever you can. Keeping a positive attitude is always key even when times get tough, every challenge is an opportunity to grow and learn. Just stick to it, and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.

I’ve received great support from the forepersons and electrical director I work with. They allowed me to excel by exploring myself within the company by trying different things.
What advice would you give someone looking to get into the trades or just starting in the trades?
Don’t expect to be the best from the start. Learn how to listen, be punctual, and have a positive attitude. If you have that throughout your career, all the knowledge, speed, and skills will come over time.
