Miranda Gellert

First-year Plumbing Apprentice

Why did you decide to get into your respective trade?

  • I’ve always had a fascination with systems, whether biological or mechanical. As I got older, my interests in infrastructure, construction, etc. grew. I’m also a very active person who gravitates toward hands-on work where I’m constantly moving. It was hard to narrow in on one trade initially, but I was drawn to plumbing, the science behind it all, and its crucial role in health, safety, and quality of life.

  • Working as a woman plumbing apprentice has been a very positive experience. I couldn’t be more blessed and lucky to work with such a respectful, kind, and forward-thinking team. They take every opportunity to pass on their trade wisdom while being patient and giving praise where it’s due.

  • My time at Plan Group so far has been filled with sincere support from the journeypersons, supervisors, and forepersons I work with.

What advice would you give someone looking to get into the trades or just starting in the trades?

  • The advice I’d give to future apprentices is that if your heart and soul are truly in it, it will show, and it matters. You must not shy away from asking questions, taking initiative, and putting the effort in to learn everything you can about your trade. You need to be open to frequent challenges and ensure you are reliable. Make all the connections you can along your journey. Lastly, it’s a good time, so have fun.

Electrical Apprentice

Why did you decide to get into your respective trade?

  • When I was younger, I worked as a general labourer, which sparked my interest in the skilled trades. I was drawn to the complexity and problem-solving nature of the electricians. I spoke with an electrical foreperson who told me to apply to the JAC apprentice program. I wasn’t sure if I should go through with it, but I was given the advice of, "you won’t know if you don’t try". So here I am.

  • The most recent positive experience I had was during my transition from my previous job to my current one. In the past, I had no experience with Fire Alarm Systems. It wasn’t until my last role, where my team was eager to share their expertise with me. I absorbed as much information as I could, even though, at times, it was tough. I'm now applying all the knowledge I gained in my current role and feel confident in contributing.

  • Every job is different with their own set of challenges but what makes those challenges easier to overcome is when you have support from your team.

What advice would you give someone looking to get into the trades or just starting in the trades?

  • Getting into the trades was one of the best things I could have done for myself and for my family. The work is challenging and rewarding. You go home knowing you are making a difference in the community.
