Apprentice Appreciation – Jacob, Charlotte, and Matthew

Jacob Czaja

Plumbing Apprentice

Why did you decide to get into your respective trade?

  • I always enjoyed working with my hands and knew I wanted to get into the trades. I decided to get into plumbing because I liked the challenge of figuring out how to construct plumbing systems while ensuring it meets code requirements.

Share a positive experience that has helped you in your journey to date.

  • A positive experience that has helped me in my journey would be working with many journeypersons who still love the work they do after many years in the trades and also seeing some of them advance into more senior roles.

Share the support you receive from your peers and supervisors.

  • The support I receive from my peers and supervisors has been great so far. It truly motivates me to want to learn and be the best worker I can be. They are always willing to teach and help me and are open to any idea I have.

What advice would you give someone looking to get into the trades or just starting in the trades?

  • Some advice I have would be to always ask questions. One of the best ways to learn is to ask and learn from someone who has been doing it for years. Also, don’t settle for something you don’t enjoy. I was working in another trade before finding something I love to do.

Charlotte Smrekar

Electrical Apprentice

Why did you decide to get into your respective trade?

  • My dad inspired and encouraged me to get into the trades. After looking into the different trades I can get into, I thought electrical would be a great choice for me.

  • Any time I help play a factor in completing a big task is a positive experience for me. It is always nice to feel good about the work you do and see how everything comes together.

  • When I'm faced with a challenging task that I might not get perfect on the first try, I am encouraged by journeypersons and given tips and tricks that help me to successfully complete the task.

What advice would you give someone looking to get into the trades or just starting in the trades?

  • My advice for anyone looking to get into the trades is to always give it your all in the work you do and to not be afraid to make mistakes along the way.
